Understanding Key Stage 2 SATs
At the end of Year 6, all children across the country sit the Key Stage 2 SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests). These are national tests in ReadingSPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), and Maths. Writing is assessed separately by teachers through ongoing classwork rather than a test.
The tests are marked externally and each child receives a scaled score rather than a raw score. This is how it works:
  • Scaled score of 100 = your child has met the expected standard for the end of Key Stage 2.
  • Scaled score of 110 or more = your child is working at greater depth (above the expected standard).
Because every test paper is slightly different in difficulty each year, the number of marks needed for each scaled score can vary. However, the typical thresholds are usually:
Expected Standard (scaled score of 100)
  • Reading: around 25–28 marks out of 50
  • Maths: around 58–63 marks out of 110
  • Grammar (SPaG): around 36–40 marks out of 70
Greater Depth (scaled score of 110)
  • Reading: usually 42+ marks out of 50
  • Maths: usually 98+ marks out of 110
  • Grammar (SPaG): usually 58+ marks out of 70
These ranges change slightly each year depending on the national standard, but they provide a good guide of what is usually expected.
